Layer by layer

A dodecahedron that you solve like a 3x3, layer by layer. The last face uses the same algorithms as the beginner 3x3.

How to read the moves

In algorithms the faces are named like on the 3x3 (U, R, F, L…). A move is 1/5 of a turn clockwise, an apostrophe the other way, and U2 is two fifths.

A WCA scramble uses a different notation: R++ and R-- turn the whole right part (everything except the left face) by 2/5, D++ and D-- everything except the top face, and U and U′ only the top face.

  • UTop face 1/5 turn
  • RRight face 1/5 turn
  • FFront face 1/5 turn
  • R++Scramble: everything except the left face, 2/5 turn
  • D++Scramble: everything except the top face, 2/5 turn

Step-by-step method

  1. 1. Star

    intuitive

Five edges around the white centre, each matching the neighbouring face with its second colour.

In colour: solved. Grey: not yet.

    • Like the white cross on the 3x3, but with five edges. An intuitive step.
