4x4
Yau
Yau is the most popular method on the 4x4: two centres, three cross edges, the rest of the centres, the edges, then like a 3x3.
How to read the moves
You hold the cube facing you. The letter is the face: R right, L left, U up, D down, F front, B back.
A letter alone is a quarter turn clockwise, looking straight at that face. An apostrophe (R′) is a turn the other way, and 2 (R2) is a half turn.
Rw (a wide move) turns the two outer layers at once, 3Rw three. A number alone before a letter (2R, 3R) turns just that one inner layer, counted from that face.
Parity algorithms (OLL parity, PLL parity) use the inner-layer moves 2R and 2L.
- RRight face up
- UUp to the left
- RwTwo right layers up
- 2ROnly the second layer from the right, up
- 2LOnly the second layer from the left, down
- UwTwo top layers to the left
- 2UOnly the second layer from the top, to the left
- xWhole cube like R
