Beginner method

Layer by layer: 8 steps from a scrambled to a solved cube, from the daisy to the yellow edges.

How to read the moves
  • RRight face up
  • R'Right face down (apostrophe = the other way)
  • R2Right face half turn (either direction)
  • LLeft face down
  • UUp to the left
  • DDown to the right
  • FFront clockwise
  • BBack: from the front it looks like a counterclockwise turn
  • The letter is the face: R right, L left, U up, D down, F front, B back.
  • A letter alone is a quarter turn clockwise when you look at that face.
  • An apostrophe (R’) is a turn the other way, and 2 (R2) is a half turn.
  • Hold the cube with yellow up and green facing you. Don’t rotate it in your hands unless a step says so.

  1. 1. Daisy

On top, around the yellow centre, 4 white edges with white facing up. It looks like a flower with white petals.

    Startscrambled cube
    Goaldaisy

No algorithm: you solve it intuitively, edge by edge.

    How to do it
    • This step needs no algorithms. Find an edge with white and move it to the top so that the white faces up.
    • Before inserting the next edge, turn the top so that there’s no white petal above that spot anymore. Otherwise you’ll push it out of the top.
    • The app shows the shortest way for your cube.
  2. 2. White cross

A white cross on the bottom white face, and the second colour of each edge matches the centre of the face next to it.

    Startdaisy
    Goalwhite cross

View from below: the white face is on the bottom of the cube.

    • petal downF2
    How to do it
    • Turn the top until the side colour of one petal matches the centre of the face below it.
    • Turn that face twice (F2 when it’s in front). The edge goes down, white facing down.
    • Do the same with the other three petals.
  3. 3. White corners

The whole bottom layer is solved: the white face and matching colours on the sides.

    Startwhite cross
    Goalwhite layer

View from below: the white face is on the bottom of the cube.

    • sexy moveR U R' U'
    How to do it
    • Find a corner with white in the top layer and turn the top so that it sits above its spot (front right).
    • Repeat the sexy move until the corner drops into place with white facing down. It takes 1 to 5 repeats.
    • A corner in the wrong place of the bottom layer: first take it out to the top with the same algorithm.
  4. 4. Second layer

The two bottom layers are solved: all 4 edges of the middle layer are in.

    Startwhite layer
    Goaltwo layers
    • rightU R U' R' U' F' U F
    • leftU' L' U L U F U' F'
    How to do it
    • Find an edge without yellow on top. Turn the top until its front colour matches the centre of the face below it.
    • If the edge’s top colour matches the face on the right, insert it to the right. If it matches the face on the left, insert it to the left.
    • An edge that went in the wrong way: take it out to the top by inserting any edge from the top in its place.
  5. 5. Yellow cross

A yellow cross on top (the corners don’t have to be yellow yet).

    Starttwo layers
    Goalyellow cross
    • yellow crossF R U R' U' F'
    How to do it
    • Dot (no yellow edge): do the algorithm once and you’ll get an L shape or a line.
    • L: hold it in the back left and do the algorithm. You’ll get a horizontal line.
    • Line: hold it horizontally and do the algorithm. A cross appears.
  6. 6. Yellow face

The whole top face is yellow (the sides don’t have to match yet).

    Startyellow cross
    Goalyellow face
    • SuneR U R' U R U2 R'
    How to do it
    • One yellow corner on top (fish): hold it in the front left and do Sune. It’s often already done.
    • No yellow corner on top: turn the top so that there’s yellow on the left, on the side of the front corner, and do Sune.
    • Two yellow corners on top: turn the top so that there’s yellow in front, on the side of the left corner, and do Sune.
    • After each Sune, check how many corners are yellow and start over. Three at most is enough.
  7. 7. Yellow corners

The top layer corners are in their places: the side colours match each other and the centres.

    Startyellow face
    Goalyellow corners in place
    • corner swapR' F R' B2 R F' R' B2 R2
    How to do it
    • Look for “headlights”: two corners with the same colour on one side.
    • Turn the top so that the headlights match the centre, and hold them in the back. Do the algorithm.
    • With no headlights, do the algorithm from any side. Headlights will appear, then do it once more. Finally turn the top so that the corners match the centres.
  8. 8. Yellow edges

    Solved cube.

    Startyellow corners in place
    Goalsolved cube
    • edge swapF2 U L R' F2 L' R U F2
    How to do it
    • Look for a side that is already completely solved and hold it in the back. Do the algorithm.
    • If the cube isn’t solved yet, do the algorithm again with the same side in the back.
    • With no solved side, do the algorithm from any side and one will appear.
